Description
Elasticsearch is a distributed, RESTful search and analytics engine at the heart of the Elastic Stack. It stores data as JSON documents across shards and replicas, scales horizontally across nodes, and powers everything from full-text search to logging and observability workloads. Operating a healthy cluster means keeping a constant eye on shard allocation, JVM heap pressure, thread pool saturation, and circuit breakers.
Foglight for Elasticsearch is a purpose-built SMA cartridge. Rather than relying on JDBC, its agent communicates with the Elasticsearch HTTP REST API directly, making it a natural fit for managed deployments such as Elastic Cloud Hosted, where it authenticates over Basic auth as the elastic user.
Business Challenge
A single struggling node - a saturated write thread pool, a tripped circuit breaker, or a JVM spending too long in garbage collection - can degrade an entire cluster. Native tooling surfaces these signals in isolation and rarely in the historical context needed to spot a trend before it becomes an outage.
Foglight for Elasticsearch consolidates cluster, node, index, and JVM telemetry into a single console with history, derived health, and rule-based alerting, so operators can correlate symptoms across the whole cluster instead of chasing one node at a time.
Key Features
The cartridge is cluster-keyed: the ElasticsearchCluster is the top-level topology object, with nodes and indices rolling up beneath it. Health and alarms aggregate from the children to the cluster so a single glance tells you whether the environment is healthy.
Collection runs entirely over the Elasticsearch HTTP API, so no software is installed on the monitored nodes. Connection details and credentials are agent properties, and the Foglight Rules Engine evaluates collected metrics against thresholds and baselines to alert before performance or availability is impacted.
